Oishi Farm

Tsushima, Nagasaki

Oishi Farm is located in Tsushima, a remote archipelago consisting of two main islands and over a hundred tiny island between Japan and South Korea. More than 90% of the land is still forest and the people and government of Tsushima practice a high level of environmentalism. Organic, regenerative farming, recycling, and restoration are instinctive and necessary practices in Tsushima.

Oishi Farm was founded in 2002 and is now managed by the second generation of the Oishi family, Yujiro. In 2017, during high school, Yujiro Oishi started learning farming and tea making from his father. In 2024, Yujiro took over the business and raised the level of tea growing and making so he could make nationally acclaimed Japanese black tea, "koucha." He also added trees to the Yuzu orchard his father had started.

Why Oishi Farm

Over the years, I have been drawn further south and farther out to the islands of Japan. When I discovered Tsushima, I felt I should have known about it before. On a map, from afar, Tsushima looks like one, small skinny island in the middle of the sea between Kyushu and South Korea. When you zoom in, you see that Tsushima is actually two main islands and, literally, more than one hundred tiny islands on its coast. It is roughly ninety-percent untouched forest.

As I explored Oishi Farm as a company and brand, I learned more about Tsushima. They had colorful illustrative packaging, depicting the Tsushima mountain cat and horse. They had a clear identity, which almost always translates into the product itself. As I spoke with Yujiro Oishi, the second generation owner, I learned of his vision, passion, commitments, and struggles. I knew that it would not be easy for him to add exporting to his plate. He runs the company with his wife and limited seasonal and part-time workers. However, I was so impressed by his ability and his vision and we have developed a collaboration which enables him to bring his amazing “koucha,” black tea, to an export market and enables us to have this very special product from this very special place.

Japanese Black Tea, "Koucha"

Japanese black tea is immediately recognized by Japanese people as delicious, special, and overlooked, especially during this matcha boom. Oishi Farm only makes black tea and only grows Benifuki, a cultivar which is known for its complex, sweet aroma and flavor. Their yuzu black tea and set of yuzu spices is made from their yuzu trees.

Oishi-san is constantly studying, sharing his tea with tea masters, getting feedback and submitting his tea to competitions to test himself and increase the quality of his already delicious tea.

Tsushima Island

Tsushima is a magical place. Halfway between South Korea and Kyushu, one hour from Fukuoka and Busan by ferry, Tsushima is a remote, undeveloped archipelago of two main islands and one hundred tiny islands surrounding it.

It's two main symbols, really mascots, are the wild mountain cat, which is larger than a big domesticated cat, and the Tsushima horse, which is small and sturdy. Both unique animals are protected and illustrated around the island. Tsushima also has a certain style of illustration, close to cartoon, which Oishi Farm uses in its labeling. We have used their labels to capture their branding and the feeling of Tsushima.
